President Obama took several minutes to greet a crowd of about 75 military personnel and their families after Air Force One landed at Hickam Air Force Base. As excited as any campaign crowd, hands were shaken, babies kissed, and pictures snapped. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann received a hug from the President who also greeted Hawaii politicians including Gov. Linda Lingle.

The Obamas will be staying at the same home they spent the holidays last year, while he was still president-elect. The five bedroom private home is on Oahu’s windward side, sitting on a peninsula overlooking Kailua Beach. The Obamas have spent every Christmas vacation in Hawaii except for 2007 when the hectic campaign schedule kept them on the mainland. That would be that “one year” Malia Obama referred to during their visit to the Children’s National Medical Center. Otherwise, according to Mrs. Obama, they go “Every year, ever since the kids were born, and even before, we go to Hawaii, because that’s where the President is from. So we go with a group of friends.” Joining the President and First Lady this year are Valerie Jarrett, and old friends Eric Whittaker and Marty Nesbitt and their wives.

No public events are planned during the 10 day vacation.
