Okay, so he’s not really stealing Christmas, but the reaction of some of the more veracious right wingers would make you think so, with their outrage over the blasphemy of the “Obamassiah”.
Still, it is true that Obamamania has hit the holidays. The “Nativity Crashing” that has so riled the right are the Obama figurines that are selling like hot cakes on the Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples. Nativities have been the centerpiece of the Neopolitan celebration for centuries, with the Christmas Tree only introduced in the 50s. Early aristocrats created large nativities that portrayed their perceptions of everyday life, which has flourished into the modern practice of including everyone from maids to politicians. One’s personal nativity is a source of joy and pride, a new piece is typically added each year. This year’s favorites, according to local craftsmen, are the Michelle and Barack Obama figurines, hands down. They are selling like hot cakes, even surpassing Prime Minister Burlosconi.
But the holiday craze for all things Obama is state-side too. From Obama books and coffee cups to Obama Christmas tree ornaments and calendars, Barack Obama might be the brightest spot for retailers this season.
He’s certainly proven to be a bright spot for Verna Blackwell-Hilario who likes to bring joy to her family and friend with her collection of holiday trees. Each of the 22 trees has a theme from an event in Verna’s life, or some other special meaning. This year’s addition has proven the most popular, drawing 150 visitors so far. The Obama tree is covered in red, white and blue lights, balls and garland, many featuring a picture or other momento of President-Elect Obama. Verna says its popularity is due to its “victory message of hope and change”. I would say that is true of everyone who is bringing a bit of Obama into their home this holiday season.
